8 Top Secrets for Making A's

Be the best student you can be now, because it will make a difference for your future – even next year! Here are On Track’s Sure Fire, Can’t Miss, Top Eight Secrets for Making A’s (well O.K., and maybe a B or two now and then):

  1. Be prepared for class. Take your textbook, notebook and pen or pencil. Get in the habit of reading the lesson the day before the teacher begins discussion on that topic. Have an idea about the topic and have questions for the teacher to clarify.
  2. Listen and take good notes. The more you focus and take better notes, the easier your tests and assignments will be.
  3. Review the notes you take in class after school each day. Make sure they are legible and make sense. If not, ask the teacher to clarify before class the next day. Keep them in a folder for that class.
  4. Do homework well - you’ll be better prepared for quizzes and tests. Do the extra exercises in the text and read the pull-out boxes carefully. Remember the bolded text and definitions. If you have assigned reading, read it twice and take notes.
  5. Begin immediately on assignments like research papers and science projects. Don’t wait until the last minute. Create a timeline and allot time for research, changes and revisions.
  6. Be positive and have a good attitude about each class and teacher. The more committed you are to succeeding in spite of your feelings the better you will do.
  7. Join a study group for a particularly difficult class. You can learn a lot from other good students. They may be able to help you understand something in a small group setting that you are uncomfortable asking your teacher about in a large classroom.
  8. Discover resources your school library has for your classes. Reference books (and similar online or DVD tools) are especially important.

Give these a try and see the difference on your next report card — you can do it!
